Description
General description
Polymyxin acriflavine lithium chloride ceftazidime aesculin mannitol (PALCAM) Listeria Selective Agar is a selective medium. Selectivity is attained mainly by the inhibitory components like lithium chloride, acriflavine, polymyxin and ceftazidime. Two indicator systems confer its diagnostic properties: aesculin and ferric iron and D-mannitol combined with phenol red. This aids in easy differentiation of Listeria spp. from enterococci and staphylococci.
Application
for differential diagnosis, for the isolation and detection of Listeria monocytogenes from fecal and biological material, food and heavily contaminated environmental specimens.
Preparation Note
Dissolve 68.8 g in 1 litre distilled water. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes. Cool down to 50°C and add the dissolved contents of 2 vials PALCAM Listeria Selective Supplement. The completed broth may appear hazy due to starch.
