Description
The acid capacity of a water is a measure for its basic properties (alkalinity), i. e. for its ability to bind acids (H+ ions) and thus to exert a buffering effect. In natural waters this capacity is mainly due to the anions of carbonic
acid (hydrogen carbonate, HCO3-, and carbonate, CO32-). Since these anions are virtually completely protonated at pH 4.3, in most cases the “acid capacity to pH 4.3” (“KS4.3”) (total alkalinity; acid-neutralizing capacity, ANC) is measured.
2. Method
The protonatable substances contained in water react with the reagent AC-1, resulting in a change of the pH and the color of an indicator in direct proportion to the acid capacity. The resultant color is evaluated photometrically.
3. Measuring range and number of determinations
Measuring range Number of determinations
KS4.3: 0.40 – 8.00 mmol/l 120
20 – 400 mg/l CaCO3
4. Applications
The acid capacity to pH 4.3 is an important parameter for the assessment of the surface-water quality and of the corrosive behavior of water as well as for the optimization of nitrification processes in wastewater-treatment
plants.
Sample material:
Groundwater and surface water
Drinking water
Aquarium water
Industrial water
Boiler water
Wastewater
This test is not suited for seawater.
5. Influence of foreign substances
The determination is interfered with when the water sample contains – in addition to carbonic acid and its salts – compounds that exert a buffering effect at pH 4.3 (e.g. humic acid salts, phosphates, polyphosphates, citrates, tartrates). or else when the water sample exhibits an intrinsic colouration or turbidity.
Acidic precipitants produce a false-low acid-capacity result.
