Kjeldahl catalyst tablets containing selenium are used to determine the nitrogen content of organic matter in a variety of applications, including: environmental analysis, food analysis, water analysis, agricultural analysis, and pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

Selenium-containing Kjeldahl catalyst tablets are more efficient and react faster than other catalysts, especially with fat, oil, and heterocyclic aromatic compounds. However, selenium is also more toxic than copper, another common catalyst.
